Today at work, I realized that we are halfway through March.
I am convinced that these months are speeding up more faster than ever before.
We are going to be 1/4 of the way done with 2018. Okay, that’s not too bad, and I know that so many of us, including myself, are super eager for the snow to melt away for good, for our winter coats to be shoved away until December, and to finally bring out the sandals. I really want to switch out my clothes and am tempted to do so this weekend, to be honest.
However, we need to focus on the non-material side of life for a minute and take a look at ourselves. I can only imagine that many of us decided that our goals for 2018 included having more time with ourselves, to slow down, spend more time making sure that our emotions and souls are healthy. We need to make sure that we are being the best versions of ourselves that we can be!
Be honest with me…are we really doing that? Or…are we stumbling into the same problem again of being too busy for ourselves?
I know the answer for myself. I wish that I was reading a bit more, spending more time in prayer, even if for just 10 minutes at night rather than realizing on a random week day that I haven’t opened my Bible for about a week or two…or three.
Yeah, I’ve even gone four weeks without opening it. And honestly, it dried out my soul a bit. Ugh.
If we are honest with ourselves, we should know by now that saying, “Okay, tomorrow I will start new again,” does not work even though we wish it would. So then…what does? What can we do differently to make sure we get that morning run in, or 20 minutes of reading in “just because”? We are the ones living this life…so why aren’t we taking care of ourselves on the inside?
Hey, I get it. We have families, school, jobs, places to go, maybe even kids, and we are the ones having to play traffic conductor.
How about this: Spring cleaning season is just around the corner. Or maybe you have already started. Make sure that you take some time for a little “Self-Spring Cleaning.”
How? Take a look at how you spend your time…and be honest. I’m sure we are all super busy from 6:00 am until 10:00 pm. But what do you do when you are waiting to feel tired? Do you just scroll through your social media? Maybe a few times per night, trade it for reading. Or, instead of spending your morning watching the news, go for that morning walk and then look later to see what path you should take for your commute to work. You can also listen to the news in your car instead. Any breaking news story will be on the radio.
Look to see how you are spending the 5 or 10 minutes of free time in between the busy moments and see if you can make changes. It probably won’t be easy, but it will be worth it.
Bonus tip: check every week or every other week to see if you are holding yourself accountable for these things. Meaning, don’t only do a self-check in once every three months. Don’t be afraid to schedule it or put an alarm on your phone once a week.
The better you take care of you, the smoother things go. Trust me.
